Ah, it’s time to check off this rite of passage! Sam has been to his first sleepover party and has lived to tell all about it. (Well, I’m using “tell” loosely since it doesn’t include details when coming from a seven-year-old boy.) Thankfully we never got “The Call” to pick him up in the middle of the night. Phew! Indeed some very, very brave and generous parents in our ‘hood invited six first-grade boys to come sleep over with their birthday boy on Saturday night. From all accounts it all went very well, but I’m sure those parents slept quite soundly on Sunday night – and maybe Sunday afternoon as well!
Sam was only the second boy asleep at 10:30 pm (GASP — he has NEVER been awake that late in his life). A couple of the other boys were up well past midnight. Egads, the rumor is that one boy never went to sleep at all! For a DOUBLE GASP, Sam was awake for the day at 2 am!!! By 3 am, ALL seven boys were wide awake and back on the Wii, along with the birthday boy’s adorable four-year-old sister. (That girl sure can hang!)
Then the ‘rents showed up at 9 am to claim their zombie boys complete with bloodshot eyes. Ah, but they were such happy zombies bouncing around trying to find their socks and shoes! Sam announced, “I want my birthday party to be EXACTLY like his!” Gulp. And then he wanted to go out and buy the same Super Mario Galaxy video game that they played all night long. Now if that isn’t a ringing endorsement of a rockin’ birthday party, I don’t know what is.
As for Daddy Mac and myself, we had a nice kid-free evening. I have to admit, though, the house was eerily quiet, almost too much so. With a shock, we realized this was the first time we were alone in the house overnight since Sam was born. Crazy!
Each boy decorated a pillow case stenciled with his initials, a great souvenir. Sam still has it on his pillow over his favorite Star Wars one. Ah, memories! If only those pillow case could talk…
