No Place Like Home

Man oh man, it has been almost a month since my last entry into the blogosphere. To the charges of dereliction of blogging, I plead not guilty by reason of sheer insanity. We (really just me) were all preoccupied with getting ready to go to Arizona, then being in Arizona for a week, getting back from Arizona, then immediately getting ready to go to NYC a few days (daze?) later for a wedding, being in NYC for a few days (a real daze for sure), and then recovering from being in NYC. Whew! The 40s may be the new 30s and all, but the fact of the matter is that I just can’t hang like I used to unfortunately.

So where to start? It sure is good to get away, but there truly is no place like home. When we left, our neighborhood had that downtrodden I’m-so-beaten-down-because-of-winter look, but when we returned spring had truly sprung. Lush green plants and trees were thriving wherever we looked, but there was also a distinct layer of green pollen on everything, even on our car parked on the deck at the airport.

I already knew that Sam has a severe allergy to pollen, but for him to come from the high desert of Arizona right back into Pollen-Palooza here in Richmond was nothing short of awful. The poor guy’s eyes were red-rimmed and swollen within minutes and pretty much have been ever since. Unfortunately I’m pretty clueless in dealing with allergies, since that is one affliction I’ve never had to deal with. It actually took us a few days to realize that there was pollen all over his bedroom (sheets, pillow, and comforter too.) We had had someone paint it while we were gone, which worked out great. She left one of the windows in his room cracked open to help get the paint fumes out of the house, which was a great idea. However, that couple of inches inadvertently let pollen swoop in onto everything. Oh well, lesson learned. It’s still good to be home, even with pollen and without a view of any red rocks.
