When founded in 1607, Santa Fe’s full name was”La Villa Real de la Santa Fe de San Francisco de Asis.” I dare you to say that one ten times fast! (Here’s a tip – it is easier when sober.) This mouthful translates to “The Royal Town of the Holy Faith of St. Francis of Assisi.” So the city is named for St. Francis of Assisi, the namesake of our current Pope Francis. Who knew? Not me anyway! And the grand cathedral is named after — you guessed it right! — St. Francis of Assisi! It is stunning. Interestingly enough, it seems to be the only building in town built with French architecture.
We stayed at a uniquely spectacular resort a few miles outside of town called the Bishop’s Lodge, named for the Bishop who build the city’s largest church, the St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral. It was such a gorgeous place, great for families with very spacious rooms, excellent customer service, and an awesome pool. Aaah!
This bishop also happens to be the same one who appeared in Willa Cather’s classic novel, Death Comes for the Archbishop. (Haven’t read the book myself yet, but it is now on my “Book Bucket List.”) This was the site of the bishops’ retreat home few miles outside the city. (Everyone needs to get away, even from Santa Fe!) His same tiny little church is still there, now a picturesque National Landmark Site.
All in all, Sante Fe is such a special place with such a cool “aura” to it. It’s just a wonderful place to be! Pictures may say 1,000 words, but even 1,000 words aren’t enough. Put Santa Fe on your bucket list and the Bishops’ Lodge. I’ll go with you — would love to go back — it went by way too fast!
