My third historical fiction novel will focus on Elizabeth Van Lew, a fierce and cunning Union spy from Church Hill in Richmond. This wealthy spinster ran the South’s most effective spy ring, reporting directly to General Grant. She also organized a massive outbreak of Union prisoners-of-war from the dreaded (and aptly named) Libby Prison.
